Trimlight vs Minleon: system, price, warranty and dealer lock-in

Trimlight is the best-known permanent lighting brand in the Northwest, and if you've had a quote in Clark County it was probably from the Trimlight dealer of record for this area, Vancouver Permanent Lighting in Woodland. Trimlight NW, the big dealer for Western Washington, is in Graham and does not list Clark County.

Below is what Trimlight publishes about its own product next to what Minleon publishes about the lights we install, read on the dates shown. Where a brand doesn't publish a number, we say so rather than guess.

Where Trimlight is stronger

The warranty headline. Fifty thousand hours on parts is a long time, and their aluminum channel comes in more colors than Minleon's six. The Edge app has more preset patterns and publishes voice control, which Minleon does not.

If you want music sync and a hundred-plus presets out of the box, Trimlight has them.

Where Minleon is stronger

White light. Trimlight lists RGB diodes only, so its 'white' is red, green and blue mixed; Minleon's pebbles and pucks carry a dedicated white diode, which is why our warm-white nightly setting looks like a true 2700–3000K and not a pale lavender. If you'll run warm white 300 nights a year, this is the difference you'll live with.

Mounting choice. Trimlight is one product in one channel. We install pebbles, deep pebbles, pucks and C9s in channel, magnetic pebbles on steel drip edge with no channel at all, C9s on clips, bistro strings and tree wraps, all on one controller.

Servicing. A Trimlight system is serviced by the dealer who holds your zip code. Minleon parts are sold at retail and installed by independent dealers, so you are never tied to one company.

On price

Trimlight's own blog puts installs at $18 to $35 per foot; its Arkansas dealer publishes $18 to $28. Their Clark County dealer publishes nothing. Our Pebble Track is $32 per foot with the controller included, which sits in the upper middle of Trimlight's range. We are not claiming to be the cheapest; we are claiming you can read the number before anyone visits, and that the number includes the controller and power injection.

On a 220-foot two-story: $7,040 with us; $3,960 to $7,700 on Trimlight's published range, depending on the dealer, bulb and spacing.

About the 'lifetime' warranty

Trimlight defines lifetime as 50,000 hours of use and covers parts. Labor beyond the first year is up to the dealer, the warranty doesn't transfer to a new owner, and app, Wi-Fi and network problems are excluded. Minleon's is shorter and plainer: one year standard, three with the premium. We put ours in writing on the quote, including who climbs the ladder.

Our verdict

Choose Trimlight if the long parts warranty, aluminum channel colors and music sync matter more than white quality and price transparency. Choose Minleon with us if you want a true warm white, a mounting method that fits your house (including steel roofs and trees), and a per-foot price you can check on your phone.

Questions about this comparison

Is Trimlight a franchise?
Trimlight calls it a dealership, not a franchise: a one-time territory payment, no royalties, exclusive zip codes. The practical effect for you is the same: one company installs and services it in your area.
Can you service a Trimlight system?
No; it's a proprietary system. If you have Trimlight and want to add a second building, a tree or a patio, we can install Minleon on those as a separate system.
Which is brighter?
Trimlight publishes 20–60 lumens 'depending on method of measurement'; Minleon publishes 28 lumens warm white for the D35 puck and nothing for pebbles. Neither figure is measured the same way. We'd rather show you both lit at the measure.
